Adding the COVID-19 pandemic where most people stay in their own homes and mostly rely on the internet, and the upcoming elections where more information is spread about the election candidates, well, that adds more to the reach of the information. As an individual what can you do to not easily believe and to not be a victim of every post shared on the internet?

HOW MISINFORMATION  FURTHER SPREADS

Watch this video to learn more about how fake news spreads.

Misinterpretation

Comprehension plays a big role in disseminating false information. The main source may say "Let's eat, grandmother." But the one who received the information might interpret it as, "Let's eat grandmother," which is definitely wrong if we'll listen to it.

The Ripple Effect

The ripple effect is the continuous spreading of an information. However, a ripple effect in a false information means that when it spreads from one to another, the scenario may also differ from one to another.

WHAT CAN I DO AS AN INDIVIDUAL TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING?

And that is on...

FACT CHECKING

HOW TO FACT CHECK

1. Evaluate

Learn if the information is current and relevant, and check the author and purpose of the news. Through looking at its purpose, we can get clues about the information being bias.

2. Search to Confirm

It's important to know the sources and if there are other news about it.

3. Get News from News Sources

Don't solely rely on Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, and other social media platforms.

4. Watch out for red flags!

Don't easily trust sites that does not end up with gov. , edu. , org. , net.

LET'S TRY TO DEBUNK INFORMATION THAT CIRCULATED ON THE INTERNET RECENTLY

On November 14, 2021, this was posted both by Rappler and SM Mall of Asia that the MOA Globe has been stolen. It might have really confused and alarmed people as this was posted by outlets that are trusted by many. However, many have overlooked the hashtag "#BrandRap". The stolen MOA Globe was actually for a publicity stunt. Still, it caused a stir to the mass. What is your opinion about this? Do you think marketing strategies disguised as news are needed now in this age of false information?

This post shows a quotation of Vice President Leni Robredo which have obviously reached numerous Filipinos. This quote is partially true however, there are missing contexts. What the Vice President really said is that, "Iyong suggestion ko lang, Ka Ely, sana may subgroup pa iyon – sana iyong mga less than 60 na may comorbidity, unahin sana iyong walang capacity mag-work from home. Kasi iyong iba work-from-home naman, nasa bahay lang, tapos nakipag-unahan pa sa vaccine. Sana mauna at tulungang hanapin sila, kasi ang iba hindi naman marunong mag-register online, so dapat mas proactive iyong pagyaya." Which means that she was just emphasizing the term work-from-home.

Although it's cliché, nevertheless
it is still relevant, let us still keep
in mind to think before we click.
